A Utah couple are likely considering their legal options after recently being taken into custody. Reports stated that the man and woman are accused of drug crimes and child endangerment. Apparently, the couple have four children under the age of 10, including an infant daughter. The two are accused of drugging the infant since the day of her birth.
Reportedly, while pregnant, the woman used heroin and painkillers, which resulted in the infant also being addicted to those drugs. In a purported attempt to hide the addiction, the parents allegedly put a masking drug on the child's gums just hours after she was born. Police became aware of the situation after the couple had been jailed for an unrelated event. A caretaker for the family pets allegedly told police that she found drug paraphernalia inside the home.
After an investigation, police reportedly found medication associated with drug addiction treatment. The children, which include the 2-month-old daughter and sons ages 2, 4 and 8, were tested for drugs. The results apparently indicated that the infant and two younger boys had methamphetamine in their systems. The infant also purportedly had other drugs in her system as well.
The couple now face charges for child endangerment and felony drug distribution. In order to handle these allegations, they will certainly want to explore their criminal defense options in order to approach their cases to the best of their abilities. Individuals facing similar circumstances relating to drug crimes may wish to consult with experienced Utah attorneys to find out more on possible defense strategies.
