A 20-year-old Utah man is likely focused on his criminal defense options. It was recently reported that the man has been accused of sex crimes involving a minor. Apparently, the man was the girl's martial arts instructor, and they met approximately one year before the man's arrest. The two had allegedly been having sexual contact for at least six months.
Police became alerted to the purported situation after questioning the girl about an unrelated incident. It was unclear what prompted the initial questioning or what caused the girl to reportedly reveal information about the man. Nonetheless, an investigation was opened, and the man was taken into custody as a result. It was noted that the man did not provide any comment to police.
The man is currently facing charges for six counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of forcible sodomy of a child. He was released from jail after posting a $150,000 bail. A parent whose children attend to martial arts school and staff members at the school all expressed shock over the arrest. It was noted that police did not believe any of the encounters took place at the school.
In order to defend against the charges for the alleged sex crimes, the man will undoubtedly want to learn more about his legal options. He may have various choices that could help him build the most meaningful presentation for handling the allegations leveled against him. Acting alongside his Utah defense counsel, he will have the right to contest the formal accusations at trial, where prosecutors will be required to actually prove the elements of crimes charged by evidence that is found to be beyond a reasonable doubt. If that burden is not met, no conviction can occur.
